CR4SEF: Canton residents can choose clean energy

By

Dear Editor:

At the 2021 Annual Town Meeting, Canton residents passed Article 30, enabling the town to develop a Municipal Energy Aggregation (MEA) program over the next year. The next step is for the Select Board to establish options for the energy sources that Canton residents can choose from. The Select Board can adopt an MEA program similar to ones used in comparable neighboring towns such as Sharon and Dedham.

Canton Residents for a Sustainable, Equitable Future (CR4SEF) is urging the Select Board to choose clean green energy options for the MEA program.

Over the past few months, we’ve been canvassing and sending postcards to our Canton neighbors to gather signatures for a petition to present to the board. The purpose is to show the board that Canton residents want the option to choose clean, renewable, and locally produced energy. So far 234 Canton residents have signed. To read the full text and sign, go to bit.ly/35JbpMW.

At the February 15 Select Board meeting, CR4SEF will make a short presentation and present the signed petition. We cannot rely on our state and federal governments alone to act with the urgency the climate crisis requires. By acting at the local level, we can make a real difference and move in the right direction.

As Canton residents, we will benefit from the town purchasing our electricity through an MEA program that gives us choices about how much clean, renewable energy we can use. Please let our Select Board know that you support clean energy by emailing bos@town.canton.ma.us.

See mass.gov/info-details/municipal-aggregation for more information about MEA.

Sincerely,

Jen Wexler and Denise Falbo

CR4SEF
