CPS musicians qualify for district music festivals
By Canton CitizenCanton school leaders are pleased to announce that 15 student musicians — 13 at Canton High School and two at the Galvin Middle School — have been invited to perform at this year’s Southeastern District Festivals presented by the Massachusetts Music Educators Association.
Participation in either district festival — Junior Districts for grades 7-9 and Senior Districts for grades 10-12 — is a prestigious honor determined by a live audition. Both events consist of two days of rehearsal followed by a concert.
Junior Districts will take place March 11-12 at Scituate High School and will include the following Canton musicians: (chorus) Elizabeth Silvasy, grade 7, soprano; (band) Tyler Goldowsky, grade 9, trumpet, and Anthony Wang, grade 9, trumpet; (orchestra) Sonia Le, grade 9, bass, and Timothy Tseng, grade 7, violin.
The Senior Districts are scheduled for April 8-9 at Brockton High School and will feature chorus members Antoine Aoun, grade 12, tenor; Adam Clyve, grade 12, tenor, Atlas Curran-Barker, grade 11, tenor; Azaliah McFarlane-Decordova, grade 12, soprano; Amanda Pagel, grade 12, alto; Caleb Wolf, grade 12, tenor; band members Rosalyn Grady, grade 10, flute; Clara Lipson, grade 12, flute; and orchestra members Derek Mar, grade 10, violin; and Christopher Pho, grade 12, violin.
Five students — Aoun, Curran-Barker, Grady, Lipson and Pho — also received scores that qualified them to audition for the MMEA All-State Festival ensembles, and two of them, Aoun and Curran-Barker, were chosen for this prestigious honor and will get to perform at Symphony Hall on March 5.
“The district festivals are an excellent opportunity for our performing arts students to work with instructors and students from around the region and state,” said K-12 Performing Arts Coordinator Catherine Eckersley. “We are so proud of all of our students who worked hard to prepare for their auditions, and we can’t wait to see them perform at their respective district festivals. We are also thrilled for Antoine and Atlas, who were selected for the All-State Festival. These are significant accomplishments for all of our students and demonstrate their talent and hard work.”
