Canton’s 2022 election will be a contest-free affair
By Jay TurnerThe 2022 spring town election season in Canton promises to be a lackluster affair after Tuesday’s nomination deadline came and went without producing any challengers.
A total of 11 people submitted the necessary paperwork to the Town Clerk’s office for the 11 offices up for grabs in the April 5 town election. As a result, all races will be uncontested, barring the emergence of a write-in candidate.
The current field includes nine incumbents, led by veteran Select Board member John Connolly, who is seeking a 12th consecutive three-year term. Also running unopposed for reelection are Housing Authority member Glen Hannington, Assessor Bill Galvin, Board of Health member Anjali Schutt, School Committee members Kristian Merenda and Maureen Moran, and Library Trustees Nancy Connery, Margaret Mead and Emily Prigot.
The two newcomers on this year’s ballot include Jim Quigley, a retired Canton Police sergeant, who is running for the open five-year Planning Board seat, and recent School Committee appointee Laura Arboleda, who is running to fill the last year of Charles Rae’s term. Elected in 2020, Rae served a little over a year of his three-year term before submitting his resignation due to work obligations. Arboleda was subsequently appointed to fill the vacancy until the next election, and she has opted to continue in the role for another year, at which point she can choose to run again for a full three-year term.
This year marks the first time in Canton since 2016 that there will be no contested races. In the five years prior to 2016, there were three such instances where every candidate ran unopposed.
