Canton High drama presents ‘Grease’ March 17-20
By Canton CitizenThe CHS Drama Club is back!” joyfully exclaims theater director Katie Brobst. “We had such an amazing time with our fall production of Clue and now are absolutely thrilled to present Grease live on stage to a full audience with our full faces! The cast and crew and the band have been working tirelessly since December to put on this incredible show for everyone. All the singing, dancing, and crazy characters are so much fun, and we cannot wait to perform for you!”
Grease is — indeed — the word! Those who have seen the movie or musical know what a treat is in store, and those who have yet to see it should prepare to be wowed.
The show premieres tonight, March 17, in the CHS auditorium with additional performances scheduled for Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.
CHS Drama has had an incredible string of musical hits over the past five years under Brobst’s direction — starting with Hairspray in 2017 followed by Beauty and the Beast (2018) and Les Miserables (2019). They came so close with Mamma Mia! before the production had to be shelved in March 2020 due to COVID-19, and now, after a two-year wait, the excitement for Grease is over the top.
Come to the show and meet Rydell High’s senior class of 1959 — hot-rodding, slick-haired guys and gum-snapping, hip-shaking gals in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the rock ‘n’ roll era in this high-energy musical. Head “greaser” Danny Zuko and new girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the romance of their “Summer Nights” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through hit songs like “Greased Lightnin’,” “We Go Together,” and “Beauty School Drop Out.” Recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation, Grease has been one of the world’s most popular musicals and movies for decades!
This show is rated PG-13 and is sure to leave you laughing, singing, dancing and cheering for more!
The show starts at 7 p.m. for the first three nights and wraps up with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, March 20.
Guests can purchase tickets in advance — and choose their seats — for $17 each at www.showtix4u.com (type “Canton” in the search box). Tickets will also be sold at the door for $20 each (best available seating) while supplies last.
“I so appreciate the journey,” said Brobst. “From the time we first meet to the time the curtain goes up is always intensely creative and collaborative. I’m so happy for the kids to again have the chance to be part of this and be on stage in front of an audience.”
Meanwhile, band and orchestra teacher Brian Thomas returns again as the maestro of the pit band. “I’m always amazed at how well the band develops through the rehearsal period,” said Thomas. “The audience hears the great score and revels in the singing and dancing on stage — that appears to happen seamlessly, which is the whole point behind everyone’s hard work.”
So come out and experience the musical magic of Grease beginning tonight at CHS. Bring the neighbors, bring the grandparents, bring the kids — as long as they’re 13 and up — and enjoy the show!
