Fire Dept. seeks additional deputy chief

To improve on the delivery of emergency services and better serve the community, Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody has proposed a reorganization of the CFD leadership team that would result in the creation of a new deputy fire chief position beginning in FY23. Doody said it is critical that the department has the proper “span of control” in place to effectively train and equip all firefighters and strengthen the department’s policies, procedures, and regulatory enforcement. Doody said fire service in general has taken on a larger role in providing public safety and health services to communities and the CFD has adopted new and progressive approaches such as the community paramedicine program, home safety programs and public education initiatives.

Under the proposed reorganization, Doody said the deputy chief of operations would supervise the fire prevention division, training, and shift operations while the deputy chief of administration would supervise the EMS Division, community paramedicine, fire investigations, CFD facilities, communication and technology, and fleet maintenance. The salary for the new deputy chief is pegged at $119,000.

SB authorizes $14.35M bond sale

At its March 15 meeting, the Canton Select Board approved a bond authorization totaling $14.345 million to fund a number of large-scale capital projects, including the planned acquisition of the former St. Gerard’s Church property. Finance Director Randy Scollins said the town received substantial interest in the bond sale and ultimately went with the lowest bidder, Fidelity Capital Markets. The bonds carry a 20-year term with an interest rate of 2.13 percent. Other projects that will be funded through this authorization include Memorial Hall exterior renovations; CHS home-side bleacher improvements; intersection upgrades at Pleasant-Sherman-Angela streets; Hansen and Galvin school ventilators; CHS HVAC unit replacement; replacement of the Police Record Management System; an air filling station for Fire Station No. 2; five water storage tanks; water main replacements on 10 streets; a front-end loader; and water design work for Randolph and South streets.
