Annual Maffie Memorial Rugby Tourney set for April 9

By

On Saturday, April 9, the Curry College men’s rugby team will hold its annual Maffie Memorial Rugby Tournament in memory of the late Anthony Maffie of Canton.

Just 22 years old, Maffie passed away unexpectedly in his sleep in 2019 from Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). His passing left a giant-sized hole in the hearts of his family and friends, not only in Canton but at Curry, where he had been working toward a nursing degree and had previously played rugby.

Eight teams are scheduled to compete in the tournament, which starts at 9:30 a.m. at Curry College in Milton.

All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Epilepsy Foundation, a national nonprofit that works to ensure that people with seizures are able to participate in all life experiences while striving to prevent, control and cure epilepsy through research, education, advocacy, and services.

On the foundation’s remembrance wall, Maffie is remembered as a “cherished son, cousin, nephew, and a loyal friend and the truest big brother to Austin. His smile was infectious, his bear hugs legendary.”

Those who are unable to attend but would still like to donate to the cause can do so by visiting the tournament’s GoFundMe page at tinyurl.com/3nparwu6. For more information about the Epilepsy Foundation, visit epilepsynewengland.org.
