News Notes: Low turnout for contest-free election

By

A total of 280 Canton voters — less than 2 percent of the electorate — made their way to the polls in Tuesday’s contest-free election as nine incumbents and two newcomers were elected to local office.

Incumbents who were reelected include Select Board member John Connolly, Assessor Bill Galvin, Board of Health member Anjali Schutt, School Committee members Kristian Merenda and Maureen Moran, Housing Authority member Glen Hannington, and Library Trustees Nancy Connery, Margaret Mead and Emily Prigot.

In addition, Jim Quigley, a retired Canton police officer, was elected to his first five-year term on the Planning Board, and Lauren Arboleda was elected to a one-year term on the School Committee. Arboleda had been serving on the committee since December after being appointed to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Charles Rae.

Busy week for Canton firefighters

Canton firefighters had a busy week as they responded to three separate fires over a five-day period.

The first call was for an outdoor fire behind a residence on Boathouse Road on Wednesday, March 30. The fire, which began from grease drippings from an unattended charcoal grill, was along a 50-foot retaining wall and included yard waste and rubbish. The crew from Engine 3 was able to extinguish the fire before it reached the house.

The following day, at approximately 9:30 p.m., firefighters from Engine 3 responded to a kitchen fire that was also started as a result of cooking and spread to the kitchen cabinets. The resident of the home put out most of the flames with a fire extinguisher and firefighters assisted with the complete extinguishment. They also checked for fire extension and found none.

The third fire call came in on Sunday, April 3, at approximately 9 p.m., for an outdoor fire on Hillsview Street. The fire had originated on the back patio and extended to the house through a basement window. Firefighters from Engine 4 attacked the fire on the patio and exterior of the house, while a crew from Engine 3 extinguished the basement fire. The fire was contained to the basement and exterior siding. Stoughton and Milton also sent fire engines to the scene to assist.
