By Canton CitizenGeorge J. Gibbs Jr. of Onset, formerly of Canton, passed away April 12 after a brief illness.
Born in Dorchester, he graduated from Canton High School and Northeastern University Lincoln Institute of Mechanical Engineering. He was HVAC mechanical engineer and the owner and operator of Gibbs-McCalister Inc. in Canton for many years before retiring.
George was an Eagle Scout and the Boy Scout Leader of Troop 26 in Canton. He enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing and was part of the No Name Golf League at Brookmeadow Country Club. He was the ultimate family man and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He has lived in Onset since 1985 and previously lived in Canton for many years.
Beloved husband of his high school sweetheart, Janice O. Gibbs (Odell). Father of Kathy McCormack and her husband, Paul, of Canton, Carrie Bird and her husband, Richard, of Canton, George Gibbs of Onset, and Timothy Gibbs and his wife, Susan, of Canton. Brother of Ada Goodrich of Canton and the late John Gibbs. Also survived by eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street, Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. Funeral service at the Congregational Church of Canton Wednesday at 10 a.m. Burial private. Donations may be made in George’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
