Interest surges in inaugural Canton Cleanup
By Mike BergerResident interest, along with company donations, have surged in recent weeks for the “Great Canton Cleanup” as organizers firm up plans for the inaugural town-wide event set for April 30.
Head organizer Jeff Sullivan told the Select Board Tuesday evening that they have received 264 volunteer signups and noted that the business response has been “terrific.” The original deadline for volunteer registration was April 28, but it has since been moved up to Friday, April 22.
Several companies have made donations, including Boston Mutual Life Insurance ($2,500), Rodman Ford ($500), Bank of Canton ($500), Dr. Alan Rapoport ($250), and TBC Management ($200).
Sullivan said there will be six primary cleanup sites: Messinger Park, downtown Canton from Town Hall to 7-Eleven, the area around the Galvin and Hansen schools, Luce School, CHS athletic fields, and the Blue Hills Trailside Museum on the border of Canton and Milton.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes a cookout for all volunteers hosted by the Canton Community Club at the CHS football field. Sullivan said all registered volunteers will be eligible for raffle prizes but have to attend the cookout in order to claim the prize.
Sullivan acknowledged that the event is occurring on one of the busiest Saturdays for the town with the Canton Little League parade and the town’s Hazardous Waste Collection Day also scheduled for April 30.
