Canton School Superintendent Derek Folan is pleased to announce the selection of Jonathan Mulhern as the new principal of the William H. Galvin Middle School.

Mulhern, who is currently wrapping up his fourth year as associate head of school at Boston Latin, will assume his new position effective July 1.

“We are thrilled that Mr. Mulhern will be joining our school community,” Folan said last week in announcing the hire. “For the last decade, he has proven to be a highly effective leader for middle grades, facilitating best instructional practices to promote strong student achievement, educational equity, and effective social and emotional growth. His ability to develop authentic and engaging relationships with students, families and staff, and to work collaboratively and effectively with all educators, was strongly praised by his current school community. His forward-thinking approach, problem-solving skills, and high expectations rose to the top as well.”

The selection of Mulhern follows an extensive search process that was co-led by Folan and CPS Technology Director Julie Shore with input from various stakeholders, including teachers, administrators and students. The committee interviewed several prospective candidates before zeroing in on two finalists: Mulhern and current GMS Assistant Principal Jim Spillane.

Mulhern will be taking over for Dr. Michael Green, who has served in an interim capacity following the promotion of former Principal Sarah Shannon to assistant superintendent.

In his role as Boston Latin’s associate head of school, Mulhern is responsible for supervising a team of 30 teachers and three guidance counselors, assisting in the school’s annual budget preparation, and serving as lead facilitator for the school’s Instructional Leadership Team and grade-level teams.

A Boston Latin alum, Mulhern previously served as the public exam school’s assistant head of school from 2011-18 and as history program director from 2010 to 2011. Before transitioning to school administration, he was an English teacher at both Boston Latin and at Pope John XXIII High School in Everett.

“Additionally, as the entire Canton school community looks forward to entering the next stages of the Galvin Middle School building project, we are confident that Mr. Mulhern will be uniquely qualified to lead the way and collaborate with all stakeholders to shape the educational vision and priorities for a new or renovated building,” said Folan.

Mulhern has a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Boston College, a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Simmons College, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in educational leadership from Emmanuel College.

“I am thrilled to have earned the opportunity to serve the Galvin Middle School community as the next principal,” Mulhern said. “In my career as an educator, I have always subscribed to the philosophy articulated by William Butler Yeats: ‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.’ I look forward to working with the terrific staff at the Galvin and partnering with our students’ families to help our young people find their voices and to foster a love of learning that will last a lifetime.”
