CHS sprinter, girls 4×100 relay team qualify for New Balance Nationals
By Mike BergerIt was a historic day for the CHS outdoor track program at last weekend’s MIAA All-State finals as both Canton entries raced their way to national qualifying times against an elite field of competitors.
On the girls’ side, the 4×100 relay team of Syriah McCruse, Talya DeGraw, Katie Oliver and Kiley Hanlon set a new program record for the second week in a row as they took fourth in the state with a time of 49.57 seconds — earning themselves a spot at the upcoming New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia.
“The chemistry, support of one another, and willingness to get out of their comfort zones is why this group has been so successful and have continued to improve their time meet after meet,” said head coach Anna Amico.
The girls had previously set the school record at the MIAA Division 4 championships, where they finished second overall in 49.87 seconds.
For the boys’ team, senior sprinter Favor Ugah also made Canton proud with another stellar showing in the 100-meter dash. After taking third at the event in the D4 meet with a time of 11.17 seconds, Ugah was nearly as fast at Saturday’s All-State final, finishing in 11.19 seconds to place 14th overall.
Ugah’s time also qualified him for nationals, which is scheduled for June 16-19 at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field.
