FinCom, CPC seeks new members
By Canton CitizenDear Canton:
Are you interested in making a difference in your community? Are you comfortable with budgets and interested in learning more about how our town services — including schools — and capital items are funded? Canton is currently seeking residents to fill vacancies on both the Finance and Capital Planning committees.
The Finance Committee works with town officials to develop revenue projections and reviews the town’s budgets, meeting with representatives of most town departments and the schools, ensuring that our town maintains a balanced budget. The Capital Planning Committee works to establish current and future (5-year) projections related to expenditures for vehicles, equipment, and other items with useful lives beyond one fiscal year. Our committees work collaboratively with town leaders, including the Select Board, School Committee, town administrator, and closely with Canton Finance Director Randy Scollins to ensure the financial stability and well-being of our town.
The FinCom meets on an as-needed basis in the summer and fall, with most work occurring from January through April. During this period the committee may meet one or two times a week and committee members are also expected to attend the annual town meeting in May. Meetings are generally held at Town Hall, though the committee has been meeting virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic to date. We could be back to normal procedures during the coming season. The Capital Planning Committee maintains a similar schedule.
Members of both committees are appointed to a three-year term by the town moderator. If you are interested in being considered, please contact the current moderator, Richard Staiti, at rrstaiti55@yahoo.com with a copy to the Finance Committee at fincom@town.canton.ma.us. If you have questions or would like additional information, please contact us at fincom@town.canton.ma.us or cdemhardt@gmail.com.
Thank You
Tim McKenna, FinCom Chair
David Emhart, CPC Chair
