The Canton Citizen is pleased to announce its MVP selections for the spring 2022 season. All-star selections are also listed below (write-ups on each Citizen all-star can be found in the 6/30 print edition as part of our annual spring sports wrap-up.)

Boys Co-MVP

Max Kupferman

Only a sophomore, Kupferman solidified his standing as one of the top high school tennis players in the region as he rolled through 15 straight opponents en route to a perfect season and a unanimous selection for Hockomock League MVP honors. “He’s very skilled and very confident for a sophomore,” noted CHS boys tennis coach Bill Donovan. “Assuming the MIAA has an individual tournament next year, I’m looking forward to seeing him in it.”

Boys Co-MVP

Favor Ugah

A breakout performer in his senior season with the CHS outdoor track team, Ugah was the last male athlete standing this spring as he advanced all the way to the New Balance Nationals to compete in the 100-meter dash as one of the nation’s fastest high school sprinters. In addition to breaking the school record in the event in a dual meet versus North Attleboro, he went on to win the 100-meter title at the league meet and placed third overall at the divisional championships. He also ran a season-best time of 23.5 seconds in the 200m and served as the anchor leg of the state-qualifying 4×100 relay.

Girls MVP

CHS 4×100 Relay Team

When it comes to athletic accomplishments this spring, it’s hard to top the collective achievements of Syriah McCruse, Talya DeGraw, Katie Oliver and Kiley Hanlon, who rewrote the record books with a string of blazing-fast times in the 4×100 relay. Not only did they finish second overall at divisionals and fourth in all of Massachusetts at the All-State meet; they also qualified for New Englands and ultimately the New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia, where they placed 18th against the top high school relays in the country. “The chemistry, support of one another, and willingness to get out of their comfort zones is why this group has been so successful and have continued to improve their time meet after meet,” noted head coach Anna Amico.
