Friel, John J.
By Canton CitizenCMSgt. John Joseph Friel Jr., USAF (Ret), 89, of Canton, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 3, 2022.
After graduating from Chelsea High School, John went on to join the Air Force, where he enjoyed 21 years of service. After retiring at the age of 38 he still had a lot of life in him. He started teaching/coaching for a number of years, then went into corporate America and continued in the IT field for the remainder of his career.
John is survived by his wife, Linda K. Friel, his children, John J. Friel III, Kirk K. Friel, Mary M. Friel, Nancy N. Wronski, Colleen A. Friel, Joseph R. Friel, Kathleen M. Friel and Veronica Thompson, 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Friel, siblings Robert Friel, Thomas Friel, Joseph Friel (USMC), MaryJane Piro, daughters Lonna Friel and Donna Kay Eickmeier, and grandson Darryl Smith.
A funeral Mass was held Wednesday in St. Oscar Romero Parish (formerly St. John the Evangelist Church) in Canton. Burial VA National Cemetery, Bourne. Donations may be made in his memory to the Canton Senior Center, 500 Pleasant St., Canton, MA 02021, or to the Canton Veterans Services Department, 660 Washington St., Canton, MA 02021.
