Post 24 tops Weymouth behind Quan’s CG gem
By Mike BergerRecent Canton High graduate Matt Quan pitched a gem of a game Friday night to lead the Canton American Legion baseball team to a 3-1 win over Weymouth and help keep the team’s playoff hopes alive.
With a subsequent loss to Natick Sunday night, Canton entered play on Monday in fifth place at 6-10-1 with one remaining game at Braintree. It is not known whether District 6 will allow the top four or six teams in each division to compete in the playoffs.
Quan’s pitching was the highlight of the week as he tossed his second complete game in a row, allowing only six hits while striking out three and walking none.
“Matt pitched an outstanding game,” said head coach Joel Lesser. “He had great command of his pitches. At one point he retired 12 batters in a row.”
Quan gave up Weymouth’s only run in the first inning on three consecutive hits with two outs. Down 1-0 in the sixth, Canton bounced back with a three-run rally. After base hits by Quan and Andy Butler, an error on a Jack Digirolamo grounder allowed one run to score and single by Hayden Rose drove in the go-ahead runs. Rose also had a near-homerun robbed by Weymouth’s left fielder in the second inning. The game was well played with good infield play by both teams.
In earlier action last week, Canton fell to Hyde Park 5-2 and was crushed by Milton 12-3. Dillon Labbe pitched well against Hyde Park and AJ Lysko recorded two RBIs.
