Canton U12 softball falls at NE Regionals
By Canton CitizenA thrilling — and truly unprecedented — summer postseason run for Canton’s U12 softball team came to an end in Bristol, Connecticut this past weekend after two hard-fought games in the New England Region of the Little League Softball World Series tournament.
Canton, making its first ever appearance at the event and representing Massachusetts as this year’s state champs, put up a valiant effort in both games but was ultimately outdueled by the Maine and Rhode Island state champs.
Rhode Island would later meet its match in the subsequent round against Vermont, while Maine was still alive as of yesterday and needed one more victory to reach the New England finals. The Connecticut state champs had already punched their ticket, and the winner of today’s finale will move on to represent the region in the Softball World Series in Greenville, North Carolina.
Congratulations to coaches Neal Quersher, Keith Burke, Kara MacEachern and Pat Murphy and all of the Canton U12 team members on a stellar summer campaign. Players on the state champion squad included Kennedy Burke, Delaney Clegg, Brynn Connor, Anna DiRamio, Natalie Hales, Shannon Lane, Reilly MacEachern, Ava Marshall, Julie Murphy, Lily Quersher, Vivian Roache and Tori White.

Canton U12 softball captures Massachusetts state title
In Canton Little League’s first year participating in the Little League Softball World Series tournament, Canton’s U12 girls are the new Massachusetts state champions.
After going 3-1 in pool play against teams across the state, the U12 green team traveled to Woburn this past Saturday to play a strong team from the Worcester region in the state final. After five nail-biting innings, Canton pulled ahead in the top of the sixth to score three additional runs. Their consistently strong defense held the lead in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the 7-4 win and the state championship.
The team is now prepping for a trip to the Giamatti Center in Bristol, Connecticut for the New England Regional tournament, which begins this Saturday, July 23. The regional tournament is a modified double-elimination format with the championship game scheduled for Thursday, July 28. The winner of the New England Region will advance to the Little League Softball World Series in Greenville, North Carolina.
Canton will face the Maine state champions in the regional tournament opener on Saturday, July 23, beginning at 8 p.m. All games will be broadcast on the streaming platform ESPN+.
In addition to the U12 team’s success, Canton also entered a U10 team in this year’s Little League softball tournament. The U10 green team went 4-0 in pool play and also advanced to the state championship game, where they fell just short in a heartbreaking, extra-innings loss to a strong Agawam team. The future is bright for Canton softball.
