Salute to Black Veterans
By Canton CitizenCanton Veterans Agent Arafat Knight (above center) joined several of his military brethren at Fenway Park on Saturday for a special pre-game salute to Black service members. The event was organized by Home Base — a national nonprofit dedicated to healing the invisible wounds of war — and served as the culmination of this year’s annual ‘Run to Home Base’ 9k/5k charity road race. The ceremony featured remarks by Lt. General Gary Brito (above left), the U.S. Army’s deputy chief of staff, and Sgt. 1st Class Julian Kitching, a decorated war hero and retired Green Beret. Special mention was given to SFC Alwyn Cashe, an Iraq war veteran and Medal of Honor winner who died a hero after courageously rescuing seven U.S. soldiers from a burning vehicle. Also pictured above with Knight is D-Day veteran Marvin Gilmore (seated), 97, a Cambridge native and noted humanitarian, entrepreneur and activist.
