Water ban in effect due to Level 3-Critical drought

With a worsening drought reaching critical levels across the southeastern part of the state, the town of Canton moved quickly this week to announce an immediate ban on all nonessential outdoor water uses.

The new mandate, which is in effect until further notice, applies to all users and prohibits the watering of lawns by any means at any time of day. Also prohibited are the washing of vehicles (except at a commercial car wash) and the washing of exterior building surfaces, driveways, sidewalks and parking areas. The only outdoor uses not covered by the current ban are those that have been deemed essential by the state Department of Environmental Protection, including uses for health or safety reasons; by regulation; for the production of food and fiber; for maintenance of livestock; or to meet the core functions of a business …
