Correcting the record on Rep. Galvin’s mailer
By Canton CitizenDear Editor:
The Committee to Elect Tamisha Civil would like to correct some inaccuracies in the mailer that Rep. Galvin sent out recently. The mailer listed money that Rep. Galvin claimed to have obtained for the district. However, when we checked the numbers, we discovered that some of the funding was sourced from the Economic Development Bill that didn’t pass at the end of the legislative session (the $4 billion spending bill remains in conference committee). In other words, some of that money has not in fact been secured.
The following funding that was listed in the Galvin mailer was part of the bill that didn’t pass:
* $100,000 for the Canton food pantry
* $500,000 for the Paul Revere Heritage Site
* $225,000 for the Blue Hills Weather Observatory
* $300,000 for the Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children
* $5 million bond authorization for improvements for the former St. Gerard’s property
* $500,000 bond authorization for the Canton Housing Authority
Thus, $800,000 in funding and $5.5 million in bond authorizations claimed in the Galvin mailer were not, in fact, obtained.
We think this is important to highlight because many people may rely on that money without realizing it might not be coming. It’s simply about keeping the claims honest. While Rep. Galvin may have believed that the bill would pass at the time that the mailers were being prepared, it was lazy at best, and disingenuous at worst, to send it out when the funding was not definitely there. These inaccurate mailers give a false impression of Rep. Galvin’s accomplishments. Voters deserve transparency in their elections and on Beacon Hill.
