Tons of trash removed from Neponset watershed
By Canton CitizenOn Saturday, September 17, more than 200 volunteers spread out across 14 different locations throughout the Neponset River Watershed to help clean up trash and debris along the river, its tributaries, and surrounding parks.
Managed by dedicated site captains and community leaders, the volunteers collected thousands of pounds of trash and debris in a three-hour period, including over 20 hypodermic needles, 19 tires, 500 pounds of metal beams, numerous metal pipes and other construction debris, a break rotor and car exhaust system, a truck door, and a car seat. Also removed were a toilet seat, a street sign, three lawn chairs, a bed frame, nine shopping carts, a TV, three couch cushions, 12 cans of paint, a carousel horse — and lots of cigarette butts, nip bottles, masks, and plastic bottles.
“Our volunteers are truly some of the best out there,” noted Eleanor Yeomans, Environmental Science Fellow for the Neponset River Watershed Association and coordinator of this year’s fall cleanup. “I am impressed by the amount of effort they put into the cleanup, and it gives me hope that we can have a much cleaner river in the future.”
NepRWA is extremely grateful to all of the volunteers who participated in the cleanup, including partners MA Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR), Deloitte, Belnel Neighborhood Association, Friends of the Blue Hills, City of Boston Parks and Recreation, Edgewater Neighborhood Association, Friends of the Boston Harbor Walk, Greater Boston Trout Unlimited, Quincy Asian Resources, Inc., Earthwatch, GZA, American Rivers, Canton DPW, Milton DPW, Norwood DPW, and photographer Michael Sheridan.
“We are very fortunate to have volunteers that are willing to give up their Saturday morning to help clean up the Neponset River and surrounding areas,” said NepRWA River Restoration Director Sean McCanty. “I am humbled by the commitment of these volunteers and thankful for the work we are able to do with their help.”
