McGowan, CM capture 2nd straight Super Bowl crown
By Canton CitizenIt was another perfect fall season in West Roxbury as Canton’s Brady McGowan and his Catholic Memorial football teammates delivered the school’s second consecutive Super Bowl championship with a convincing victory over Hockomock League power King Philip last weekend at Gillette Stadium.
In a rematch of last year’s title game, the Knights once again got the better of the Warriors, winning 27-7 in the Division 2 final to capture Massachusetts football’s biggest prize.
An all-star linebacker and team captain, McGowan certainly made his presence felt during the championship game, making key tackles and setting the tone for a dominant second half with a fumble recovery on KP’s opening possession after halftime.
With the victory, Catholic Memorial completed its second straight 12-0 campaign and ended the year as the top-ranked high school football team in the state. For McGowan, the victory served as the final punctuation mark on a truly remarkable four-year career in which the Knights lost just a single game — a 21-14 Super Bowl defeat against St. John’s Prep in 2019, when McGowan was a freshman. Since that loss, the team has won 28 consecutive games, including a perfect 8-0 mark over the last two postseasons.
McGowan will now follow in the footsteps of his two older brothers, Jack and Owen, who both starred at CM as linebackers and went on to play at the college level. Jack recently wrapped up a decorated career at Harvard; Owen is coming into his own at Boston College; and Brady will now be taking his talents to Trinity College.
