Broken pipes lead to water damage at GMS
By Mike BergerJust as December vacation was getting underway, local officials found themselves back at the Galvin Middle School on two separate occasions in the past week due to water leaks.
On Christmas Eve at approximately 5:30 p.m., a police officer who was patrolling in the area noticed water coming out of one of the doors at GMS, and the responding school facilities staffers determined it was due to a broken pipe. Staff members were able to repair the pipe, and only minor damage to one classroom was reported.
Two days later, at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Monday, December 26, Canton firefighters responded to an alarm at the school and found a broken pipe in a second-floor heating unit. Further investigation revealed that the water had leaked through the ceiling to the floor below, causing damage to the guidance office. Firefighters shut off the water supply, and Building Inspector Ed Walsh as well as school maintenance were called to the scene.
Police respond to rash of car breaks
Deputy Police Chief Patty Sherrill reported a recent increase in the number of car break-ins over the past few weeks. There were two instances where the vehicle’s airbags were removed, and in every reported case, the owner of the vehicle had left their doors unlocked.
“We just want to remind residents to lock their car doors at all times,” Sherrill said. “Also, a gentle reminder to remove purses/pocketbooks, gym bags and laptop cases. These are all attractive items that can cause your vehicle to be a target …
