Red-hot CHS boys hockey team picks up 2 more wins

The Canton High boys ice hockey team made it a perfect 5-for-5 in the month of December with a pair of wins last week over Westwood (2-2-0) and Wakefield (1-3-0).

While head coach Brian Shuman believes the Bulldogs can still find another gear, he was pleased to see them still come away with wins against two more solid nonleague opponents.

In last Wednesday’s showdown against Westwood at the Ice House, Canton fell behind 1-0 early but overwhelmed the Wolverines in an eventual 4-1 win to capture the Joe Donnelly Cup, named in memory of the longtime CHS hockey play-by-play announcer.

Brian Middleton kicked off the scoring for the Bulldogs with two minutes to go in the second period, followed 90 seconds later with the go-ahead goal from Colin Blake. Brendan Tourgee would make it 3-1 halfway through the final period, and Jeff Chaput rounded out the scoring with an empty netter.

Against Wakefield two days later at Metropolis Rink, Jack Digirolamo had what Shuman described as the best game of his high school career, scoring two goals himself and assisting on two more.

“He did it all for us in that game,” said Shuman. “He had the puck on his stick, he made good passes and he generated his own offense. He played an outstanding game for us and I was really happy to see him step up for us in a big game.”

Canton broke the game open with three goals in the first period, but Wakefield proved resilient as they battled back to make it 3-2.

“I think we became pretty undisciplined,” said Shuman afterwards. “We got caught up in the chippiness of the game and allowed Wakefield to get back into it.

Freshman Teddy Shuman, who has looked comfortable in a key varsity role, scored the first goal of his career in the win, while Chaput and Blake rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs.

This week, the Bulldogs were due to play Foxboro on Wednesday and will face their toughest test yet when they travel to Franklin on Saturday to take on the rival Panthers. The team then returns home for two games next week against Oliver Ames and King Philip.
