SB to hold another hearing on Panda Gold liquor license
By Mike BergerThe Canton Select Board will hold another public hearing to discuss the status of the liquor license held by Panda Gold, a Chinese restaurant located at 599 Washington Street, at the board’s next meeting on Tuesday, January 10, beginning at 5:30 p.m. following an altercation in the restaurant’s parking lot around 10 days ago. Details about the incident will be released by the Select Board and Police Department at next week’s hearing.
The board had previously voted 4-0 to suspend Panda Gold’s liquor license for five days from December 29 to January 2, after which point the restaurant could only serve alcohol until midnight. In addition, the restaurant could not have a DJ or allow patrons to use the pool table until further notice. The restaurant’s owners declined to appeal the board’s decision, and Deputy Police Chief Patricia Sherrill reported that they have been adhering to the stipulations given by the Select Board.
Select Board Chair John Connolly said the board will hear the evidence presented by the Police Department and then decide if further action is warranted. Connolly said the board has the authority to further suspend, modify or revoke the license.
At the previous hearing on December 6, Police Chief Helena Rafferty and Sgt. Mike Brady detailed multiple instances where police were called because of noise complaints, alcohol being served after hours, altercations in the parking lot, and patrons departing with cups of alcohol. Rafferty testified of multiple calls to the police station about noise complaints, fights outside the restaurant and patrons departing the restaurant with cups of alcohol.
Attorney Jonathan Ash, representing Panda Gold, apologized to the town and Select Board on behalf of his clients and said they do accept responsibility for the infractions. He added that they have ordered all waitstaff, bartenders and security staff to be retrained and they plan to hire a bar manager and additional security personnel.
