News Notes: Firefighters douse car fire at gas station
By Mike BergerThanks to the quick thinking of the attendant on duty and the efficient response of the Canton Fire Department, a potentially dangerous situation was averted as firefighters successfully extinguished a car fire at the gas pumps at the I-95 Sunoco on Neponset Street during the early morning hours on Friday, January 6.
Fire Lt. John Hutchinson said the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames and he credited the attendant for reacting quickly and activating the emergency fuel shut-off inside the store. A Canton Fire crew responded and were able to quickly knock down the fire before it spread to the gas pumps or the building. Firefighters and police officers remained on scene for approximately an hour until the vehicle was towed away.
Police probe drug violation at Neponset St. gas station
In another incident at the I-95 Sunoco occurring on the same day as the car fire, Canton police were called at around 7:50 p.m. to investigate a possible drug law violation. The clerk told police that he found a small plastic bag containing a white powdery substance, which he suspected was accidentally left behind by a customer. Deputy Police Chief Patty Sherrill said members of the CPD’s Community Impact Unit are attempting to obtain surveillance footage from the gas station.
Open burning season begins Jan. 15
With open burning season officially getting underway on Sunday, January 15, the Canton Fire Department would like to remind residents about the following basic rules that have been established by the state Department of Environmental Protection:
* Burning must be at least 75 feet from any building.
* It must be conducted between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and cannot be started after 12 noon.
* Fires must be attended to at all times and they should be extinguished immediately if the wind becomes too strong.
* Those who are burning should have tools on hand, including a water supply, shovels and rakes.
* The Fire Department should be notified immediately if the fire gets out of hand.
Open burning season lasts from January 15 through May 1, and a permit is required for all burns. Permit applications can be found online at town.canton.ma.us/150/Permits-Forms, and hard copies are available at CFD headquarters on Revere Street.
Per order of MassDEP, open burning permits are based on daily air quality measurements and permits can be denied if conditions are deemed to be unsafe.
Fire Lt. John Hutchinson said residents should call the Fire Department at 781-737-1655 to find out if burning is allowed on that day. Residents who obtain a permit may burn brush that is less than four inches in diameter, cane, driftwood and/or forestry debris. Prohibited materials include grass, hay, leaves, stumps, tires, or construction debris.
Hutchinson stressed that any violation of these conditions or complaints of smoke, soot, or ash deposits occurring on a neighbor’s property will result in the revocation of the permit for the remainder of the season.
