McGlaughlin, George
By Canton CitizenCaptain George “Mac” McGlaughlin, USAF, 83, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 7, 2023, from complications of a failed hernia mesh repair surgery. He fought gallantly until the end!
Mac is survived by his three daughters, Jennie McGlaughlin, Julie Seyfried and Molly McGlaughlin; his five grandchildren, Dale Hyldelund, Jordan McGlaughlin Seim, Joshua McGlaughlin Seim, Patrick Seyfried and Ryen Seyfried; and his four great-granddaughters. Mac is predeceased by the love of his life, Margret Mary “Keane” McGlaughlin.
Capt. McGlaughlin was a highly decorated Vietnam and Desert Storm combat veteran, serving over 33 years in the U.S. Air Force and retiring in 1999. He served for 14 years on active duty as a nuclear missile silo commander and spent the remaining years in the U.S. Air Force Reserves as a medic with the 914th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron out of Niagara Falls Air Force Base, NY.
Mac was an Eagle Scout and a 1961 graduate of Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. He worked in the New York State psychiatric system as a psychiatric social worker for over 25 years and as a natural bearded Santa Claus for over 10 years during his retirement. He would act as your personal muse if requested.
Mac was greater than life and lived each day to the fullest. Some say he lived 10 lives, the last being on borrowed time. He loved his country, the Boy Scouts, PT Cruisers, his family, traveling, a great meal with friends, but most of all, the party. He was always willing to generously help a fellow human and would always take the time to listen to your story and provide comfort, advice if asked, and counsel. Mac loved humor and always had a relatable funny story even if it was the fifth time you had heard it. The world will be a less fun place without him.
Mac’s family will be hosting a celebration of life event in Fredonia, NY in the coming months. Please make donations to the Captain George “Mac” McGlaughlin Foundation for “Things That are Fun” in lieu of flowers.
