Police report spike in juvenile shoplifting cases

In a community advisory issued on Friday, January 13, the Canton Police Department reported a “significant uptick” in juvenile shoplifting incidents at the Seasons Corner Market in recent weeks, and several of the individuals who have been caught are students in the Canton Public Schools.

The advisory urges parents to discuss the issue with their children and to warn them that the crime of shoplifting is an “arrestable offense” under Massachusetts law and the Canton police are taking the matter very seriously.

“It is our hope,” notes the advisory, “that by partnering with us on addressing this shoplifting concern with your children and continuing to echo the importance of making good choices, we can bring this concern to an end without any further incidents.”

Canton man busted for drunk driving in stolen vehicle

A 39-year-old Canton man who allegedly went for an alcohol-fueled — and destructive — joyride through Stoughton and Canton in a stolen vehicle is facing a long list of criminal charges after he was apprehended by police on Bolivar Street on Sunday evening, January 15.

According to Deputy Chief Patty Sherrill, a witness had initially called police around 6:30 p.m. after observing the suspect crash his vehicle in Stoughton and then proceed down Pleasant Street into Canton. The witness then reported seeing the driver go over the curb at the Pleasant Street rotary and into some of the greenery before backing off the curb and heading down Bolivar Street, where he was stopped by Officer Ben Berkowitz.

During the inventory of the vehicle, police found several alcohol nip bottles and also learned that the car had been reported stolen from the KFC parking lot on Washington Street in Stoughton. The suspect, Jorge Moreno, a resident of Arboretum Way in Canton, was charged with OUI liquor, possession of an open container of alcohol, leaving the scene of property damage, and receiving a stolen motor vehicle …
