Select Board Vice Chair Lisa Lopez formally announced her campaign for re-election to a second term on the Canton Select Board, to be determined by Canton voters on April 4, 2023.

“Despite the town’s focus during the last three years on shepherding the community through COVID, the Select Board accomplished many initiatives that position us for continued growth and vitality,” said Lopez. “I do not take individual credit for any single accomplishment, as we are a board of five people, but I am personally proud of always showing up and listening, speaking up, and helping take things to the finish line.

Lopez was a founding contributor in support of the Paul Revere Heritage Site and remains deeply committed to the success of the site to drive economic and cultural benefits to the town. During her first term on the Select Board, she helped build coalitions of support that led to:

* Regular informational webinars on Canton’s response to the COVID crisis

* Town meeting approval of Municipal Electric Aggregation, which will help deliver cleaner energy to Canton residents

* Town meeting approval of a Municipal Housing Trust to create and preserve more housing options, particularly to veterans, persons with disabilities, older adults and middle-income households, including municipal employees

* Town meeting approval to purchase the St. Gerard’s buildings and open space to be repurposed for the long-term enjoyment of Canton residents

* The near-term introduction of Canton’s first ever public dog park

* The first annual Canton Clean Up Day

Explaining her reasons for running for re-election, Lopez said, “Although the pace of change can sometimes be frustratingly slow and seem bureaucratic, projects often take time for good reasons. Many of the matters I’ve helped lead are gaining traction. I’d like to remain on the Select Board to see them to completion and continue working with a growing number of committed citizens who care deeply about our community.”

“My priorities include planning for a sustainable future as well as bringing economic growth and renewed vitality to our downtown and Route 138 business districts. We all want a high quality of life and quality of community, for ourselves and for future families. This means we need to keep growing the commercial tax base so that we can afford to advance our quality of community, including supporting our schools. There is no substitute for investing in our children and families.”

Voters may participate in the April 4 election by voting in person or voting by mail. To vote by mail, registered voters must complete an Application for Mail-in Ballot, available on the town website or at Town Hall. The ballot application must be submitted each calendar year. “Whether you vote in person or vote by mail, remember to vote — no one knows better than me that every single vote counts!” said Lopez, recalling the 2019 and 2020 town elections.

Ms. Lopez, 68 years old, is a retired attorney and life sciences company leader who has resided in Canton for almost 40 years but understands she is “still a newcomer” to some. She and her husband, Victor Del Vecchio, raised three children in Canton and have been actively involved in the local community. She is delighted that their youngest, Dana Del Vecchio (board member, Canton Residents for a Sustainable, Equitable Future), her husband, Will Evans (digital learning specialist, Luce School), and daughter Mariam Evans are currently Canton residents and continuing in the tradition of proud, involved community members.
