CHS drama presents ‘Little Shop of Horrors’
By Canton Citizen“It’s a night of off-beat humor, great music, and a show that will rattle your senses,” says Katherine Brobst, Canton High School drama director. “It’s our spring musical — Little Shop of Horrors — the deviously delicious Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi smash musical that has devoured the hearts of theatre goers for over 30 years.”
Based loosely on the 1960 black comedy film, Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of a meek floral assistant, Seymour Krelborn, who stumbles upon a new breed of plant he names Audrey II — after the girl of his dreams. Things quickly turn into a nightmare, however, as Audrey II is a people-eating plant that demands more and more victims!
This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivorous plant promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it — blood! Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out-of-this-world origins and her intent toward global domination.
“The music is infectious,” said CHS pit band director Brian Thomas. “You’ll be hard-pressed to stay in your seats and avoid dancing with the singers.”
Brobst noted that Little Shop is one of the longest-running off-Broadway shows. “The charmingly tongue-in-cheek comedy will be sure to have you laughing and cheering for more,” she said.
Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday evening, March 17 and 18, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 19, at 2 p.m. in the CHS auditorium. The run time is approximately two and a half hours and the show is rated PG-13. Tickets are $17 in advance with reserved seating or $20 at the door.
