Winter’s Finest
By Canton CitizenThe Canton Citizen is pleased to announce its 2022-23 winter all-star selections. The full list, complete with write-ups for each athlete, appears in the April 20 print edition as part of the Citizen’s annual winter sports wrap-up section.
Boys MVP
Ruairi Ritson (Wrestling)
A program legend in the making, Ritson broke out in a big way in his junior season, leading all CHS wrestlers in victories and advancing all the way to the MIAA All-State Championships. He was particularly impressive at the D3 central meet, where he reeled off four straight convincing wins as an unseeded wrestler to capture the sectional title at 195 pounds. He then went on to compete at the D3 state meet, where he won three of his first four matches before bowing out in the third place match. “Ruairi just does everything the way we coach it to perfection,” noted head coach Nick Matt. “He’s truly a stud in the making.”
Girls MVP
Carolyn Durand (Ice Hockey)
A senior captain and four-year starter in goal, Durand capped her historic career with a league MVP award, which was a testament to her individual brilliance as well as her indispensable role on one of the state’s most successful ice hockey programs. Appearing in all 26 games for the Bulldogs this season, she allowed only 28 goals while racking up eight shutouts, and she had some of her finest performances against the toughest opponents. “She’s just phenomenal,” said head coach Nikki Petrich. “She’s a big reason that we have so much confidence and why we’re able to stay in so many of these games.”
