Girls track dominates field events in win vs. Sharon
By Mike BergerA dominant win by the Canton girls in a dual meet with Sharon highlighted a busy and productive stretch for the CHS outdoor track teams last week.
In addition to competing against the Eagles, both squads also took part in the state freshman-sophomore meet on Saturday morning, while the upperclassmen headed down to New Bedford to compete in the Sunset Invitational.
In last Tuesday’s meet against Sharon, the Canton girls won comfortably 82-54 in what head coach Anna Amico said was a total-team effort. “Field events, specifically throws, were huge in the win,” said Amico. “We held Sharon scoreless in all three throwing events and had over 40 personal records during the meet.”
Katie Oliver and Emma Massih were double winners for Canton with Oliver topping the field in the triple jump and long jump and Massih taking first in both the shot put and discus. Other winners included Chloe Duibosson in the 400-meter hurdles, Jayda Proffit in the high jump, and Luran Slotnick in the javelin.
Canton also took first in two relay events: the 4×100 behind the team of Annie Odivin, Diana Tambi, Proffit and Oliver, and the 4×400 behind Alyssa Wong, Brianna Rosebrugh, Duibosson and Lianna Camille.
Several CHS athletes earned points against Sharon in two or more events, including Proffit, who placed second in both the triple jump and 200m; Tambi, who was the runner-up in the 100m and long jump; Jocanda Cabral, who placed second and third in the javelin and shot put; Ava Klidas, who placed third in both the 100 hurdles and long jump; and Johanna Bouwmeester, who took third in the 800m and mile.
Other top-three finishes were turned in by Camille in the 400, Oliver in the 100 hurdles, Tahlia Weaver in the 800, Jess Brathwaite in the shot put, Slotnick in the discus, Kenzie Bennett in the 400 hurdles, Anika Valluri in the 200, Giglio in the javelin, and Bridget Feeney in the discus.
At last weekend’s MSTCA freshman-sophomore meet, top performers for the CHS girls team included Slotnick, who finished eighth in the javelin, and Zoe Scibelli and Duibosson, who placed just outside the top 10 in the 400 hurdles.
At the Sunset Invitational meet, Oliver bested the field to win the long jump while teammate Syriah McCruse took first overall in the 100-meter dash. Both girls were also part of a 4×100 relay team that finished second overall along with Tambi and Proffit. Other top performers at Saturday’s invitational included Massih, who placed third in the shot put and fifth in the discus, and Proffit, who finished sixth in the 100 hurdles.
The Canton boys team also had several standout performances, although they would ultimately fall short against the Eagles 89-43.
Dan Krasylnykov paced the Bulldogs with wins in both the 200- and 400-meter races, while Mo Arugollu and Ruairi Ritson placed first in the 400 hurdles and shot put, respectively. Ritson added second and third place finishes in the discus and 400 hurdles, and Arugollu took third in the triple jump.
Christian Hanlon also had a stellar day for CHS, finishing second in the 100m and long jump, where he set a new personal best with a jump of 18 feet, four inches. Sam Vail and Mark McDonough also finished as runners-up in the 110 hurdles and javelin, respectively, and Kareem Porter earned his first varsity point with a third-place finish in the shot put.
At the state freshman-sophomore meet, CHS freshman JJ Faulk had a phenomenal day, running the 100-meter dash, competing in the long jump and running the first leg of the 4×100 relay along with Casey Lee, Zach Sanon, and Hanlon. Lee also competed at the meet in the 200m and recorded a new personal best with a time of 25.26 seconds.
At Saturday’s Sunset Invitational meet in New Bedford, Arugollu bested his 400 hurdle performance from earlier in the week with a new career-best time of 64.77 seconds. Austin DiBiasio also recorded a new personal best at the meet, taking eight seconds off his top mile time to finish in 5:03, and teammate Dhruv Patel came away with a PR in the 200m (24.91 seconds).
