Cutter shines as CHS girls tennis takes 2 of 3
By Jay TurnerSophomore singles player Camila Cutter continued her torrid stretch and every other starter recorded at least one victory as the CHS girls tennis team enjoyed its best week to date — doubling its season win total and taking two of three matches overall to improve to 4-8.
As of May 16, the Bulldogs were still on the outside of the Division 2 playoff picture and faced long odds to make the cut with only three matches left to make up several spots in the rankings.
Still, the Canton girls had to be happy with their play as they took down two league opponents (Attleboro and Mansfield), while Cutter got to exact some revenge against Sharon’s Judy Song — the top singles player on a 15-0 Eagles team that is currently ranked fourth in all of Division 2.
After struggling against Song in a 6-2, 6-1 loss back in early April, Cutter was at the top of her game in Friday’s rematch, winning 6-4, 6-4 in a memorable showdown that lasted two and a half hours.
Head coach Joel Chamberlain said it was one of the most hard-fought matches he has ever witnessed. “Each point seemingly went on for minutes,” he said. “Camila fought the heat of the day and her opponent’s determination to win in straight sets. This was Camila’s finest win in her career.”
The victory was Cutter’s third in as many days last week and extended her winning streak to six in a row, putting her at 7-4 after a 1-4 start to the season.
Second singles player Olivia Durham also found her way into the win column last week with a three-set victory over her Attleboro opponent, and she nearly pulled it out against Mansfield the following day, losing 10-6 in a third-set tiebreak.
At third singles, Charlotte Powers struggled against Attleboro but bounced back nicely with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over her Mansfield opponent.
In the doubles matches, the first pairing of Kelli Woodworth and Grace Powers continued their strong season with a pair of straight-set victories, while the second doubles duo of Panayiota Michaelidis and Liv McCloskey recorded a hard-fought win against their Hornets opponent (7-5, 6-4).
Overall, Chamberlain said it was a great week for the girls tennis team. “We won two competitive matches and had stellar performances all around,” he said. “This was our best week of the season in so many ways.”
After hosting Oliver Ames earlier this week, the girls were due to wrap things up with away matches against Foxboro on Thursday and Mansfield next Monday, May 22.
