Kupferman caps perfect season despite tourney loss
By Jay TurnerFor the second consecutive season, CHS boys tennis standout Max Kupferman ended his spring with a tournament victory and a perfect 16-0 record. But once again, Kupferman’s individual brilliance was not enough as the Bulldogs fell 4-1 to a highly ranked opponent in the opening round of the Division 2 state tournament.
This time, it was a fellow Hockomock League foe — the sixth-seeded Sharon Eagles — who ended Canton’s postseason bid after making quick work of the Bulldogs at second and third singles as well as both doubles matches.
“Sharon is one of the best teams in Division 2, so there’s no shame in losing to them this year,” noted CHS coach Bill Donovan. “But it’s always disappointing to go out in the first round.”
Kupferman’s win came in straight sets against Sharon’s top singles player, Jacob Slavsky, 6-3, 6-3. The win sealed a second straight undefeated season for the Bulldog junior, who also capped his sophomore campaign with a tournament victory in last year’s loss to No. 11 Wakefield.
Donovan said Kupferman is truly an elite high school player and is unmatched in the Hockomock League in terms of skill and production.
“He’s the top player in the league and he showed it once again,” said the Canton coach. “Thirty-two straight wins over two years — in the league and in the tournament — is an outstanding streak.”
With the loss to Sharon, the Bulldogs finish the season at 8-9 overall, while the Eagles, now 18-3, advance to the Round of 16 to face No. 22 Nauset. The winner of that match would then go on to play either No. 3 Concord-Carlisle or No. 14 Walpole in the Division 2 quarterfinals.
