Quick-thinking ambulance crew spots house fire
By Mike BergerThe Canton Fire Department, with assistance from the State Fire Marshal’s Office, is investigating a suspicious fire that broke out inside a vacant home under construction at 2300 Washington Street (Route 138) in the early morning hours on Thursday, June 15.
According to Fire Lt. John Hutchinson, a Canton ambulance crew had spotted the fire after smelling smoke in the vicinity of the residence while returning from transporting a patient to Milton Hospital.
After locating the source of the smoke and reporting the fire to dispatch, Firefighter/Paramedics Joe Wright and Dan Harris forced entry into the home while awaiting the arrival of the fire apparatus. They closed the doors to contain the fire that was still in its early phase. A Canton engine crew responded and quickly extinguished the fire.
The damage was contained to the contents only and did not spread to the structure. Building Commissioner Ed Walsh was notified and responded. The owner arrived and was issued a cease-and-desist order by Walsh as the work being done exceeded the scope of work on the building permit.
“Clearly the early detection and quick action by the firefighters prevented a significant loss for the owner,” noted Lt. Hutchinson.
