Canton Jr. League softball captures MA state title
By GuestCanton’s Junior Division softball team is headed to the East Regionals in Orange, Connecticut, after capturing the Massachusetts state title on Saturday, July 15.
Returning the core of last year’s Major Division softball state championship team, Canton’s offense overwhelmed the visiting Peabody team in consecutive games to win the best-of-three state final and become Little League Softball Junior Division Massachusetts champions.
Paced by their place setters Lily Quersher (on base 8 times, 5 runs scored), Vivian Roache (on base 8 times, 6 runs scored) and Cameron Weber (on base 6 times, 4 runs scored), and timely hits from Fiona Trendell, Delaney Clegg, Ava Marshall, Alyssa Kosh and Anna DiRamio, Canton scored an incredible 42 runs in the two wins. Shannon Lane and Julie Murphy added the power, each clobbering a home run. Everyone in the Canton lineup scored and everyone in the lineup drove in at least one run.
While the offense took care of business, Reilly MacEachern and Natalie Hales controlled the Peabody lineup, keeping the opposing hitters off balance for the 14 innings of the two games. Every time Peabody started putting together a rally, the Canton defense came up with huge defensive plays to end them, including a spectacular double play completed by Murphy and DiRamio, and outstanding running catches by Lane and Kosh.
Canton will now travel to Connecticut to represent Massachusetts in the East Regional Championships with a chance to advance to the World Series in Kirkland, Washington. The Massachusetts champions are scheduled to begin regional play today, July 20, at 10 a.m.
