GMS visioning sessions set for Sept. 6 & 11
By Mike BergerThe first public forum to gain public input into the planned renovation of the Galvin Middle School will get underway next month. In collaboration with the design firm and project manager, Ai3 Architects and LeftField, the Canton Public Schools have scheduled two educational visioning sessions on Wednesday, September 6, and Monday, September 11, from 4-7 p.m. in the Canton High School library.
Superintendent of Schools Derek Folan said the School Department will be reaching out to solicit participation from students, staff, families, and community members. “We will be looking for a representative number of stakeholders from each group,” he said.
Folan said the purpose of the visioning sessions is to envision the teaching and learning experiences of future GMS students; the needs of middle school students and staff; and the educational spaces that will enhance and support this vision. Information gathered from the two workshops will then be used to support the preliminary educational programming report that will be sent to the Mass. School Building Authority for an initial review.
Folan stressed that grade configuration discussions will not be part of the visioning sessions. Instead, that topic — and specifically the question of whether to bring the fifth graders up to the new middle school — will be reviewed during separate community forums planned for September, October, November, and December.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the school community to be involved in a forward-thinking educational visioning discussion that will contribute greatly to the design of the new Galvin Middle School,” said Folan. “We want to have many voices around the table, including those who have very young children. This is a community effort.”
