Indivisible Canton backs public library decision
By GuestDear Editor:
Indivisible Canton, with more than 140 members, supports the Canton Public Library’s recent decision to decline a request to remove a memoir by a nonbinary, asexual author from the shelves.
In this, we are on the same page as the American Library Association, which strongly opposes all forms of censorship. We applaud our library’s thoughtful and professional policies for selecting and reconsidering library materials.
Parents have the right to guide their children’s reading, but parents should not be making decisions for other parents’ children. Specifically, a small group of parents should not dictate what books other people’s children are allowed to read.
Books are tools for understanding complex issues. Limiting young people’s access to books does not protect them from life’s complex and challenging issues.
Removing and banning books from public libraries is a slippery slope to government censorship and the erosion of our country’s commitment to freedom of expression.
Our public library is a precious resource for our community, providing a wide range of information and services to all of our citizens. We cannot allow this public good to be hijacked in the interests of a small minority of people who seek to subvert traditional American values of free thought and individual choice.
