Smathers, Edith L.
By Canton CitizenEdith Longfellow (Scruton) Smathers of Canton, a contented traveler, departed on her final journey on August 18, 2023, at Milton Hospital only to be reunited with the loves of her life, her late husband, Russell, and their son, Bruce.
Born in Boston to the late George and Irene Scruton, she was educated in Hyde Park and Boston schools. Edith worked as a lab and x-ray technician at the Lahey Clinic in Boston for many years before entering the durable medical field, retiring at 75. She was also the past treasurer of the Canton Women’s Club.
Edith and Russ were snowbirds and spent many years in Englewood, FL, and with their second family Maryann, Melinda and Samantha Barnsley in Plymouth, New Hampshire.
Edith is survived by her son, Duane Smathers, of Canton.
The family would like to thank the people at Cantondale Chiropractic for the wonderful care given to Edith. Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 26, in the Chapel at Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton. If desired, donations in Edith’s memory can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
