Mitcheroney, Paul E.

Paul Edward Mitcheroney “Mitch,” 67, a lifelong resident of Canton, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2023, at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy illness.

A lifelong resident of Canton, Paul was the oldest of five children of Dominic M. Mitcheroney and Suzanne (Capen) Mitcheroney.

A 1974 graduate of Canton High School, Paul later went on to further his education at Wentworth Institute of Technology. While he held other positions throughout his lifetime, most recently his job as a salesman at Bass Pro Shop brought him a lot of joy. This role was a natural fit for him as he was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, camping, and gardening.

Paul was known for his warm heart, his love for his hometown and his passion for history. These interests served him well as the president of the Canton Historical Society and a member of the Canton Historical Commission, roles he was beyond proud to hold.

Above all, Paul was a family man. By far, the roles he took the most pride in was that of a husband and a “stay-at-home dad.” Paul made sure he was there for each and every milestone in his children’s lives. He enjoyed tending his gardens and cooking for his family and friends, and never said no to a cooking competition. Some of Paul’s most cherished moments and memories were created during time spent with his family and friends at his campsite on the Cape Cod Canal.

Paul was the beloved husband and best friend of Marie Elena (Gillespie) and a devoted father and incredible role model to Abbey Mitcheroney of Columbus, OH, and Ryan Mitcheroney of Canton. He was a caring brother to Suzanne Mitcheroney of Canton, Helen Columbo and her late husband, Joseph, of Canton, David Mitcheroney and his wife, Lori, of Lakeville, and Linda Carr and her husband, Stephen, of East Bridgewater. He was also the cherished brother-in-law of John Gillespie and his wife, Deborah, of Canton, and Steven Gillespie and his wife, Elizabeth, of Quincy. In addition, he was a treasured uncle and great uncle to several nieces and nephews.

Paul’s thoughtful, loving nature and courage were evident in all aspects of his life. He faced challenges with bravery and always offered a helping hand to those in need, putting the people he loved first. He was a pillar of strength for his family and friends. He carried these qualities along with him during his long battle with sarcoidosis. His legacy of love, kindness and community service will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to know him.

Paul’s life was a testament to his commitment to his family, his community, and his love for the outdoors. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his life, remembering the joy he brought to all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and in the many lives he touched through the years.
