DeYeso, Robert L.

Robert L. “Bob” DeYeso, 98, of Canton, a loving and faith-filled man, known for his selfless service to his family, community, and country, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2023, at the German Center in West Roxbury. Born in Somerville, Bob lived a life that was a testament to his unwavering faith, dedication to service, and love for education.

Bob was the cherished husband of Carol K. (Scotton) DeYeso for 18 years, and of the late Elizabeth (Chamberlain) DeYeso for 50 years. A devoted father, he leaves behind Donna (John) Schleicher and Denise (Joseph) Thornton, Robert L. (Misa) DeYeso Jr., Dianne (Robert) Moores, and Michael (Pamela) DeYeso. Bob also leaves his stepchildren Karen (James) Ambrose, Robert (Stephany) Kelley, Susan Kelley Sica, Ann (Kevin) Poulsen, Stephen (Anna) Kelley, and Carolyn (John) Robinson. Bob was the dear brother of the late Joseph DeYeso and Thelma Shinners. His legacy will continue to live on through his 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 15 step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren, who will remember him fondly for his kindness, wisdom, and enduring love. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A proud graduate of Everett High School and Boston College, Bob was a lifelong learner who valued education. His commitment to knowledge extended beyond his personal achievements, as evidenced by the scholarship he started and funded in memory of his first wife, Elizabeth DeYeso, at Canton High School. This annual award, given to a deserving graduating senior, is a testament to his belief in the transformative power of education.

Bob served his country with honor and pride as a veteran of the United States Army during World War II, earning the rank of sergeant. Among the military medals and awards Bob received for his service, he was most proud of the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, and the French Legion of Honor Medal. His service extended into his professional life, where he worked for many years as a district manager for the Social Security Administration before retiring. His dedication to his country and commitment to public service defined his work ethic and character.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Bob was extensively involved in his community. As a member of the American Legion Post #24 and the Canton Veterans Services Department Honor Guard, he continued to serve his fellow veterans and community long after his active-duty service. Bob also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, demonstrating his selfless spirit and commitment to helping those in need.

Bob’s faith was a guiding force in his life. He was a devoted Catholic and active member of St. Oscar Romero Parish, where he served as the CCD coordinator and a teacher, lector, Eucharistic minister, and volunteer for the Pre-Cana Program. His faith was not merely a personal belief but a call to action that influenced his interactions and service to others.

Throughout his life, Bob embodied the virtues of love, faith, and selflessness. His legacy of service, devotion to his family, and commitment to his faith will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. His memory will be cherished by his loved ones, and his influence will continue to impact his community for years to come. Robert L. “Bob” DeYeso will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street, Monday from 4-7 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Oscar Romero Church in Canton Tuesday at 11 a.m. Burial Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Bob’s memory to the DEHS/Canton Senior Center, 500 Pleasant St., Canton, MA 02021, or to the Canton Veterans Services Department, 600 Washington St., Canton, MA 02021.

Per Bob’s personal request, please wear bright and colorful clothing to the wake and funeral. Bob loved to celebrate the good things in life.
