CHS Making Strides
By Canton CitizenAfter a three-year hiatus due to COVID restrictions, a large contingent of Canton High School students made their way into Boston on Sunday, October 1, to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
More than 160 pink-clad CHS students, representing several sports teams and after-school clubs, completed the six-mile trek along the Charles River while raising much-needed awareness and thousands of dollars to aid in the fight against breast cancer. During the event, a group of six Canton students were called to the stage at the Hatch Shell to accept an award for raising the second largest total in the 2022 walk (held at Memorial Field)—and this year they surpassed that number with nearly $10,000 raised, bringing their 20-year total over $155,000.
Addressing the crowd in front of the Hatch Shell after accepting the award, CHS senior volleyball player Charlotte Clyve noted that there is “no barrier when it comes to making a difference,” and events like the breast cancer walk not only strengthen the bonds within the CHS community but also “empower individuals to become proactive advocates in the fight against breast cancer.”
“With that all being said, today we honor the survivors, remember those who we have lost, and support those fighting,” continued Clyve. “We are so fortunate to be involved in this incredible event for a brighter future.”
Fatima Sidibay, a fellow senior volleyball player and team captain, also made a point to recognize the “survivors and thrivers” of breast cancer. “As women, it’s important that we see many role models such as yourselves in our lives,” Sidibay said. “Due to your strength, courage, and will, we are here today and able to spread even more awareness. Without you, we wouldn’t have the tools to treat, or the means to perform research that will one day, by the will of us all here today, cure breast cancer. By being here at this walk, we’re supporting a community, families, friends. Hopefully, this shows us all that no one is alone, and we all have a community to fall back on when the time arises.”
