Town announces new Anti-Scam Task Force
By Mike BergerNick Maffeo, president of Canton Co-operative Bank, and Diane Tyan, head of the town’s Department of Human and Elder Services, have announced the formation of an Anti-Scam Task Force to help all residents protect themselves from scams.
Maffeo, appearing before the Select Board Tuesday night, said the task force will include representatives from both the public and private sectors, including Canton Co-op and Bank of Canton, various town departments, the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office, Canton Police Department, the town’s Management Information Systems office and Director Louis Jutras, Veterans Agent Arafat Knight, and the Canton Housing Authority. Maffeo said the group will also reach out to representatives of Shaw’s and Walgreens for input.
“The goal is to empower people to help stop it before it hurts you,” Maffeo said.
Jutras is designing a web page for the task force, and plans are in the works to set up a hotline. Educational sessions will be held at the Canton Public Library and recorded.
New park envisioned at library
Andrea Capone, executive director of the Canton Public Library, and Peg Meade, chair of the Library Board of Trustees, told Select Board members that they had a favorable meeting with the Canton Community Preservation Committee (CCPC) concerning their application for over $500,000 in funding to create a park in front of the library on Washington Street. The goal, they said, is to create an outdoor space where people can read books and relax in the shade. The park concept is part of a three-part plan to improve the library grounds, along with upgrades to the area outside the children’s section and creation of a nature overlook over wetlands in the back of the library. If the CPCC approves the library’s application, the goal is to have the new park completed between April and July of 2025.
