Computershare employee completes trip to Nepal
By Canton CitizenHank Seemore, an employee at Computershare in Canton, recently returned from a seven-day trek through the Himalayas to help Nepalese students get to school more easily.
Through a corporate giving initiative at Computershare, Seemore joined 25 employees and raised more than $100,000 for the World Youth International School in Nepal’s Gokarna region to double the number of its school buses and significantly cut down the amount of time pupils currently spend waiting to travel.
The school’s two existing buses transport many of the school’s 650 students to school every day, with each vehicle making multiple daily trips. As a result, some students can arrive up to two hours before their first class and remain on the premises well beyond the end of the school day.
The school will also use the funds to purchase much-needed items for the classroom and support the wages of extra teachers to help reduce the number of children in each class, which will improve students’ learning experience. Seemore, a leader within Computershare’s U.S. Treasury team, said he is passionate about supporting the education of students at the World Youth International School and hopes his efforts will inspire people to donate to his cause.
“I myself have received kind support from others, which has shaped who I am as a person, both personally and professionally,” he said. “As a result, I am trying to rally support for this noble endeavor so that others can benefit.”
“Everyone at Computershare is really proud of the trekking team for their dedication to improving the lives of school children in Gokarna,” said Stuart Irving, global CEO of Computershare. “Their efforts reflect Computershare’s commitment to creating a positive impact on communities globally.”
The trek forms part of the work of Change a Life, Computershare’s global community giving program.
Computershare’s Change a Life Foundation has supported the school for the past five years through regular donations that staff make through their pay checks, which the company matches.
