Ruane, John F.

John F. Ruane Jr., known affectionately by friends and family as Jack, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2023, in Centerville.

Born in Norwood, Jack lived a life marked by dedication to his community, a passion for the outdoors, and an unwavering commitment to his family and friends. He was the beloved husband of Nancy A. Ruane (Becker) and a devoted father to Kathy Delbene and her husband, Kenny, of Peabody, Cindy LeBlanc and her husband, Bob, of Mansfield, and the late John F. Ruane III and his wife, Renee, of Canton. His role as a family man extended to his cherished sister, Mary Ruth Perras and her husband, Rick, of Brookline, and the late Karen Ruane-Fadden. Jack’s legacy as a grandfather was filled with love and guidance for his grandchildren: John F. Ruane IV, Leah LeBlanc, Nicole LeBlanc, Trevor Ruane, Thomas LeBlanc, and Emily Delbene.

A proud graduate of Canton High School’s Class of 1959, Jack’s thirst for knowledge and commitment to public service led him to achieve his bachelor’s in law enforcement from Northeastern University and later a master’s degree from Anna Maria College. His educational endeavors laid the foundation for a distinguished career in law enforcement. Jack dedicated 31 years of his life to the Canton Police Department, where he was deeply respected by his colleagues and the community he served. His leadership skills and integrity were evident to all who worked with him, culminating in his retirement as the chief of police in 1995. His impact on the department and the town of Canton was profound and long-lasting.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jack was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2095 in Canton. His involvement with the council was a testament to his faith and his desire to serve others. Jack’s interests outside of work reflected his love for life and nature. He spent many joyful hours on the golf course, where his sense of humor was as apparent as his competitive spirit. Fishing trips and camping adventures were among his favorite ways to unwind and connect with family and friends.

Those who knew Jack would describe him as loving, funny, outgoing, and personable. He had a knack for making everyone around him feel special and valued, and his laughter was contagious. Jack’s presence could light up a room, and his warm-heartedness touched the lives of many. Jack’s life was one of purpose and joy. He was a pillar of strength for his family, a trusted friend, and a respected figure in his community. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us.

As we say goodbye to Jack, we celebrate a life well-lived and cherish the memories he leaves behind. His love for his family, his dedication to his profession, and his zest for life will forever be remembered. Jack’s journey may have come to an end, but his story will be told for generations to come.

John F. Ruane Jr.’s life was a beacon of love, laughter, and generosity. He will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Rest in peace, Jack, and thank you for the joy, wisdom, and kindness you shared with us all.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, December 23, in St. Oscar Romero Church in Canton. Arrangements provided by the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street.
