Town honors WWII vet on 100th B-Day
By Canton CitizenThe Cornerstone at Canton assisted living community celebrated the 100th birthday of resident and World War II veteran Duncan Macleod with a special “rolling rally” drive-by ceremony held on Tuesday morning, December 26.
Enlisting in the U.S. Army at 17 years old, Macleod served for three years as part of the 10th Mountain Division and was stationed as a lead ski officer in Italy for six months during the war. He had been counting down to his highly anticipated 100th birthday ever since he turned 99, noting that his lifelong goal had always been to live to 100.
Organized in partnership with the Canton Veterans Services Department and Canton Fire and Police, the rally departed from the American Legion Post 24 at 10 a.m. and ended on Revere Street in front of Cornerstone at Canton.
To honor the milestone occasion, several notable guests were in attendance, including state Senator Paul Feeney, Canton Veterans Agent Arafat Knight, and Select Board member John Connolly, who declared December 26 as Duncan Macleod Day in the town of Canton.
The event served as a touching tribute to Macleod, who was hailed for his bravery, service, and kind spirit. Macleod, members of his family, and other attendees enjoyed waving at the police cars and fire engine as they drove by the assisted living community.
In a Facebook post recapping the event, Cornerstone at Canton thanked all of the participants and attendees for helping to give Macleod the celebration he deserves. “We find you to be the most wonderful man around,” the post concluded. “Happy Duncan MacLeod Day to all who celebrate!”
