By Canton CitizenPeter Scott of Canton, 80, formerly of Scituate, passed away on January 26, 2024.
Peter was the son of the late Walter and Harriet (Mollan) Scott. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lorin and Jake Sullivan of Canton, and his grandchildren, Erin and Megan Beatty and Ava, Cole, and Quinn Sullivan. Peter is also survived by his sister Penny Scott-Pipes and his brothers and sisters-in-law Paul and Gail Scott, and Teddy and Georgie Scott, all of Scituate. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. Peter was very proud of his family.
Peter grew up in Scituate and attended Scituate High School. He went on to attend the University of Nebraska, where he had a successful track career as a two-time All-American and an NCAA national champion in the 880-yard run (half-mile). He was proud to be inducted into the Scituate High School athletic hall of fame in 2000 and the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association’s Athlete Hall of Fame in 2011, and to be named on the Wall of Fame at the University of Nebraska Field House.
After college, Peter came back to Scituate and was a physical education teacher in the Canton Public Schools for 30 years. He also coached track at Norwell High School for several years. While teaching and after retiring from teaching, Peter held various odd jobs that he enjoyed, such as working at Tedeschi’s liquor store, working on the Scituate Police Department, lobstering, painting houses, and bartending at the VFW.
Peter loved to play golf and played for many years at Scituate Country Club and then at Hatherly Country Club. He enjoyed music and seeing performances by his friend Jimo and his band. In his later years, Peter enjoyed sitting on his deck across from TKs, waving to friends and sitting with visitors.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 3, from 2-4 p.m. at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road in Scituate. Funeral and burial services will be private and held at a later date.
