Canton High School named to AP Honor Roll
By Canton CitizenThe College Board has recognized Canton High School as an Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Roll School. AP courses offer high school students high-level classes that can qualify them for college credit or advanced placement once they begin college.
CHS was recognized with a Bronze Level Award as well as an Access Award. To earn the Bronze Award, at least 40 percent of the school’s graduating class must have taken at least one AP exam during high school with at least 25 percent scoring a 3 or higher (out of 5) on at least one of those exams. In addition, at least 2 percent of the graduating class must have taken five or more exams, and one of those had to have been taken while they were freshmen or sophomores. According to the College Board, this is to ensure that the AP experience is being spread across their high school career, rather than making students feel a disproportionate amount of pressure in any school year.
In addition to receiving the Bronze Award, CHS was also honored with the AP Access Award, which recognizes schools that demonstrate a clear and effective commitment to equitable access to advanced coursework. Schools earn the additional award if the percentage of AP exam takers in underrepresented and/or select groups (low-income, for example) mirrors the school’s overall demographics.
“This distinction properly validates the model we maintain and our philosophy on allowing access to all students,” said CHS Principal Jeffrey Sperling. “There are many models across the commonwealth, but we believe increasing student access to top-level courses is imperative, and the Access Award recognition is a testament to the success of our model.”
“In addition to our students, I’d like to commend our educators, support staff, and administration at Canton High School,” said Superintendent of Schools Derek Folan. “Canton has a history of academic excellence and equitable access, which is reflected in our mission, vision and core values. Our staff’s dedication to helping each student achieve their own personal level of excellence is exemplary. We are very proud of our students and Canton High School.”
