April town election to feature multiple contested races
By Jay TurnerThe field has been set for the 2024 annual town election and Canton voters will have no shortage of options this year with 18 candidates returning nomination papers for 12 open seats.
Continuing a trend of local elections producing contested races, this year’s ballot will offer choices for five offices: Select Board, School Committee, Planning Board, Library Trustees, and Board of Assessors.
In the Select Board race, incumbents Michael Loughran and Tom Theodore are both seeking reelection and will look to fend off challenges from two first-time candidates, Trish Boyden and Rita Lombardi.
Also facing contested races against first-time candidates are incumbents Kendall O’Halloran, who is running again for School Committee against Jennifer O’Donnell, and Rocco Digirolamo, who is running for Board of Assessors against Kathleen Howley.
On the Planning Board, incumbent Kathy McCormack is running for a full five-year term and faces a challenge from John Marini Sr., a Canton developer who previously served a stint on the Zoning Board of Appeals. The Planning Board also has a two-year seat open to fill a vacancy and Sean Robinson is running uncontested for that position.
For the second year in a row there will also be a contested race for Library Board of Trustees, with Mindy Milman returning as a challenger against incumbents Janet Chamberlain, Joan Schottenfeld and Christine Untersee.
Additionally, there are three candidates who are running uncontested for public office, including incumbents Tracy Kenney (town clerk), Alan Rapoport (Board of Health), and Lisa Lopez, a former Select Board member is running for a five-year seat on the Canton Housing Authority.
The 2024 town election will take place on Tuesday, April 2, with an option available for voting by mail.
