Sixty-four Galvin Middle School students worked together to bring a little girl named Matilda to life on stage in the Canton High School auditorium.

Matilda tells the story of a student who, with the help of her teacher, takes on the terribly cruel headmistress at her school. The story is based on the beloved children’s book of the same name written by Roald Dahl. The musical adaptation was written by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelley.

A group of high school students — plus 13 middle schoolers — worked on the tech crew. Julie and Jamie Goodrich led the creation of sets and props and are parents in the district. Julie recently directed Finding Nemo Jr., which was put on by the students at Luce Elementary School. GMS music teacher Emma Carlson served as music director and another teacher, Corinne Coates, was assistant director and featured dancer choreographer.

“It was an absolute honor and privilege working with these students for three months to bring a show to life on stage,” said Amy Delaney, GMS theater teacher and director. “I loved seeing the effort they put in, how they became a community, how they embraced their characters, and how they cheered for one another throughout the process. My favorite part was sitting back opening night and letting them take the reins to put on a show. There is no other feeling in the world quite like it.”

GMS reading teacher Julie Hall oversaw costuming. “Julie is an incredible and invaluable part of our team this year and we are so fortunate to have her with us,” said Delaney.

“The cast has worked incredibly hard over the last several months to create an awesome and memorable production,” said GMS Principal Jonathan Mulhern. “I am very grateful to our director, Amy Delaney, our musical director, Emma Carlson, and our team of staff and family volunteers for all of the work they have done with our young performers to get them ready to shine in the spotlight.”
