A watercolor painting by Canton High School visual arts teacher Stephen Gaul is being recognized at the national level by the Art of Education University (AOEU) at their inaugural exhibit, “Palette Perspectives.”

Gaul’s painting, titled “Dragonfly,” will be on display at the National Art Education Association’s national convention in Minneapolis next month.

“I created this watercolor as part of my ongoing process to receive my Master of Art Education degree from AOEU,” said Gaul. “This is the first year the school offered a juried art exhibition of student work, and I am thrilled that my painting, ‘Dragonfly,’ was selected into the exhibit that will be on display as part of the NAEA Convention.”

In its letter of acceptance to Gaul, AOEU noted that this year’s selection process was particularly challenging because of the “extraordinary talent and creativity” they saw in the submissions. According to the letter, Gaul’s painting stood out for its originality, technical skill, and the unique perspective it brings to the AOEU gallery.

This announcement comes at the same time that three CHS students were honored with Scholastic Art Awards. “We are extremely lucky to have such talented people teaching art here in the Canton Public Schools,” said Patricia Palmer, the district’s visual arts coordinator. “We congratulate Steve and thank him for his commitment to sharing his passion for art with his students.”

Coincidentally, a digitally drawn self-portrait by one of Gaul’s students will also be on display at the NAEA convention. The Massachusetts Art Education Association selected freshman Amelia Chabon’s untitled self-portrait for a Youth Art Month President’s Choice Award earlier this month.

“To have both Amelia and Stephen’s work honored on a national level is truly impressive,” said Palmer. “And for Amelia to be honored as a freshman shows the depth of her extraordinary talent. We are excited to see how this recognition inspires her creative endeavors in the years to come.”
